Gender : Ewe                                   Pet name : Dolly

    Breed name : Mudd'le, Dolly            Born : 01-03-2003

Bought by us in 2004 (at 1yr old) from Mrs E Dawson of Shrewsbury, at the Chelford Rare Breed Sheep Sale, from her prize winning ‘Mudd’le' flock (Hence the Mudd’le before her name).

Dolly came from a prize winning home. Mrs E Dawson has a prolific record of prizewinning with her Mudd’le flock of Greyface Dartmoor. Her sheep dominate shows to this day and win many championship trophies across the board, so were better to look to buy a young ewe on which to establish our future ‘Stones’ flock.

I could see in the sales ring that Dolly had a certain ‘something’. She was only young but we could see her potential as a good breeding ewe. She had an endearing gentle manner about her and a lovely long curly fleece. We bought her along with another pretty Mudd’le ewe ‘Dotty’ and the two of them went on to provide strong foundations for our own ‘Stones’ flock. (Dolly and Dotty’s pet names were taken from two lovely old dears that lived in our village at the time.)

Dolly soon became known as our ‘bit of posh’ due to her good breeding and model looks and was a particular favourite of mine as she was a real darling, a great mother and a joy to have around the place.

With us Dolly had 7 lambs:

    •   George (2005)

    •   Byron & Bronte (2006)

    •   Charlie & Charlotte (2007)

    •   Derek & Doris (2008)

In 2008, at the age of 5, we sold her at the Chelford Rare Breed Sheep Sale – a sad sale, but we had to make way for younger ewes to start off our own flock. (Miss you Dolly)

Gender : Ewe                                       Pet name : Bluebell

Breed name : Stones, Bluebell            Born : 01-03-2006

Bluebell was one of twin homebred lambs (brother Bradley) born spring 2006 in our second year of lambing.

We had high hopes for Bluebell as her parents both had the ‘look’ we were aiming for in our Greyface flock. ‘Buster’ her sire was a magnificent if not belligerent ram that was very dear to our hearts and her dam was a wide faced and stocky ewe ‘Hazel’ who we had bought from a prize-winning flock 3 years previous.

Bluebell and Bradley couldn’t have been more different. Bluebell was a massive ewe lamb – well set, healthy and strong. Bradley on the other hand, although a ram, was half her size and looked rather pathetic. Bluebell continued to grow in size and strength and became one of our most prized ‘Stones’ flock ewes. She won trophies in many show outings as a lamb and shearling and was a favourite with all the show’s visitors for her sweet nature.

Bluebell had no lambs with us but was carefully sold ‘in lamb’ to her new owner. She was one of four ewes we sold in the spring of 2008 at the York Rare Breed sale.

Gentle and calm, Bluebell was a real sweetheart, it broke our hearts to part with her and I’m sure that she went on to have some lovely lambs of her own.

Gender : Ewe                                     Pet name : Hazel

Bought by us in 2003 (at 5yrs old) from Ted Wiggins at the Skipton Rare Breed Sheep Sale, from his well respected ‘Dove Syke' flock (Hence the Dove Syke before her name).

We were lucky to be able to buy Hazel as she was a real looker and from good blood lines - only available as Ted was vastly reducing his stock. She had a pretty, wide head and thick set body (a look I aimed to replicate in our future Greyfaces).

Hazel was to become the cuddly teddy bear of our flock. She was one of three ewes we bought from Ted. Hazel along with Erica and Erin, were our first sheep and the three of them kindled our love of sheep.

Things took off after the arrival of our first stock ram 'Buster' and there was no looking back. Hazel was very dear to me as she was one of our first breeding ewes and mother to our first 'Stones' flock lamb.

With us she had 2 breeding seasons and had 3 lambs:

    •   Pebbles (2005)

    •   Bluebell & Bradley (2006)

In 2006 we sold her to a friend in Haworth, as a companion sheep where she happily lived out her days. (Hazel passed away only last year at a ripe old age of 13! bless her woolly socks)

Our first homebred lamb, Blossom was always going to be special. She was a twin lamb (brother Ben) from one of our original flock starting three ewes called Ellen. Both her mother and father had great bloodlines and Blossom turned out to be a cracking ewe.

Blossom inherited her mother’s gentle characteristics, a lovely fleece, pretty face and soulful big brown eyes. She was a favourite ewe of mine and stayed with us for 5 years and established herself as a firm favourite with our young children - she was always a real cutie.

With us Blossom had 5 lambs:

    •   Dinkerbel & Daphne (2008)

    •   Edward & Esther (2009)

    •   Fergus (2010)

Sold in Aug 2010, at the age of 5, Blossom helped another local family to establish their own flock of Greyfaces, just as we had done 7 years before.

Gender : Ram                                      Pet name : Dougal

Dougal is one of our latest a homebred rams born 18th April 2008. He has a ‘Stones’ mother (Bronte) and a ‘Coppice Side’ father (Errol) and was a twin lamb with brother Donald.

From day one Dougal was a looker, he had a wide strong head and plenty of size to him. He was twice as big as his twin brother and was very lively and playful. We had big hopes for Dougal and have kept him entire as a breeding ram for use in our flock, being careful not to inter breed.

Unlike his grandfather (our aggressive stock ram Buster) Dougal has a very kind nature and is never pushy or stroppy which is a good thing given his substantial size.

He has masses of lovely woolly curls and struts around the field like he owns it. A lovely broad head, nice markings and sturdy stature makes Dougal a very magnificent sheep. Dougal is the nearest ram we have in looks to our old favourite Buster and for this fact is very dear to us.

He is a pretty boy and a gentle giant with all the super characteristics of a typical Greyface Dartmoor.

Gender : Ram                                           Pet name : Buster

Breed name : Ty Capel, Pendragon         Born : 02-03-1999

Well – what can I say about Buster – where do I start - he was the largest character I’ve ever known in a sheep and his personality will stay with me for ever.

Buster was bought in Sept 2004 at the age of 5 and became our first stud ram. We purchased him from Mrs LP Jackson at the Chelford Rare Breed Sale as we couldn’t take our eyes off him – he had amazing stature and fantastic features - a huge square head and strong stocky body. Previously known as ‘no-neck’ for his bull-dog like conformation, Buster already had a reputation as a bit of a hand-full. He had a long track record as a rare-breed champion and a prolific sire with abundant prize-winning offspring - we were very excited to see what he could do for us.

Apart from knocking us down every time we went into his field we fell in love with him immediately. There was never a dull moment with Buster around. Although very aggressive we came to realise that this was his way of communicating and that under all that wool there was really a cheeky yet soppy and loveable character.

Buster soon became part of our family, although the children were on strict orders never to go near him due to him being ‘very boisterous’. He would bulldoze his way through gates and fences if they got in his way and was soon known by people in the village for his occasional raucous walk-about.

Buster was a great stock ram and thoroughly enjoyed his job. We kept Buster busy until his retirement in 2009 at the age of 10. Buster could never stay out of a fight with our other rams and was quite often the culprit for many incidents. Sadly his fighting days were over in 2011, at the age of 12, after wrestling his way through two exceptional hard winters he just ran out of steam.

With us Buster Sired:Jackson, Pebbles, George, Lucky, Olivia, Byron, Bronte, Ben, Blossom, Bluebell, Bradley, Blizzard, Boycott, Charlie 1, Charlie 2, Charlie 3, Chelsea, Coco, Charlton, Charlotte, Chloe, Cuthbert, Connie, Dempsey, Darcey, Doris, Dylan, Digby, Derek, Duke and possibly many more we never knew about.

Buster was the daddy of all daddies and the figure head of our whole flock – we love you Buster, you can knock me down again any day.

Gender : Ewe                                     Pet name : Sophie

Breed name : Tegla, Sophie              Born : 01-03-2001

Sophie was bought by us in 2004 at the Skipton Rare Breed Sheep Sale, from the well regarded ‘Tegla’ flock of Denbighshire, North Wales (Hence the ‘Tegla’ before her name).

Sophie was 3 years old when we bought her along with two other ewes (Betty and Margo, 1 and 3 years). We were keen to increase our breeding ewes and searched for sheep that had good bloodlines with wide well marked faces, stocky bodies and good fleeces improve further the future sheep of our ‘Stones’ flock.

Sophie had great bloodlines with her grandfather and mother coming from the prize winning and long established ‘Langford’ flock of Tavistock in Devon. This along with her ‘Tegla’ pedigree meant that Sophie soon delivered us great quality lambs.

Sophie had 4 healthy and sturdy lambs for us over the next 2 years:

    •   Chelsea & Charlton (twins) 2005

    •   Dylan & Darcey (twins) 2006

    •   Elgar 2007

Sophie has a special place in my heart as she always had a thoughtful look in her eye; she was calm, sweet and a loving mum to all her lambs. We had Sophie for 4 lovely years until we sadly had to sell her to make way for our younger breeding ewes.

We were sorry to see her go at the 2008 Rare Breed Spring Sale at York and hope she’s given another owner all the joy she gave us.

Bronte came from the best stock we had at the time; from our prize winning ram ‘Buster’ (a magnificent if not belligerent ram) and from ‘Dolly’ (our ‘bit of posh’ from the prize winning ‘Mudd’le' flock of Mrs E Dawson of Shrewsbury bought 2 years pervious).

Bronte didn’t disappoint, she was stunning and one of my all-time favourite ewes. Like her mother she had a lovely fleece and a wide pretty head. She was gentle and loving and a wonderful mother to her lambs. Bronte was a beautiful sheep and very affectionate – we loved her dearly.

With us Bronte had two lambs:

    •  Dougal (2008)

    •  Donald (2008)

It was the intention to sell Bronte ‘in lamb’ in the spring of 2008, but I couldn’t bear to part with her, so we kept her until she’d delivered and raised her first lambs (twin rams). She spent the summer with us before we eventually sold her at Chelford Rare Breed Sales in Sept 2008 (along with 5 of her half-sisters). Wished we could have kept Bronte, she was a beautiful and kind hearted sheep and one of the best ewes we have ever produced.

We kept one of her ram lambs ‘Dougal’ who has now become our current stock ram. Dougal turned out to also be a magnificent creature – thank you Bronte x

    Our sheep

We bought our first three Greyface Dartmoor ewes from the Rare breed Sales in Skipton in 2003. Initially we were just looking to keep a few rare breed sheep but our love for them grew and we soon ventured into raising our own flock and experiencing a new world of sheep husbandry.

Our own flock was called ‘Stones’ flock as we are located in an area of the village referred to as Stones. Each Greyface Dartmoor flock has a flock name and the development and preservation of the breed is controlled by the Greyface Dartmoor Breeders Association. The Association was established in 1909 to standardise, promote and develop the breed, which was well established in three areas, South Hams, Chagford and Tavistock.

11 years on we still enjoy keeping Greyface Dartmoor sheep and I wanted to commemorate the past 10 years in a series of special ‘sheep’ portraits - picking out a few characters to hopefully help share my experiences.

  • sheep studies

Each original sheep study is hand drawn on A2 sized white satin art board using Derwent Studio Coloured Pencils on a digitalised coloured background.

Each picture takes about a week to produce after carefully selecting images of the artist's own sheep that best illustrate their distinctive character.

"The commercially bred sheep is a commodity, but any shepherd will tell you that certain individuals stand out either physically, in character or even for being markedly less intelligent than other members of the flock.

Keeping a small number of rare breed sheep you learn that each individual does have its own character and even nobility under all that wool, this is what I have tried to capture."

Only the artist's most memorable sheep have been captured in this series of 8 drawings. It is hoped that more studies will arrive soon of other of Hilary's animal characters and quite possibly a series of landscape studies of her beautiful surroundings, depicting the windswept moors and valleys of the South Pennines. Watch this space . . .

    Original Artwork

Each original sheep study is hand drawn on A2 sized white satin art board using Derwent Studio Coloured Pencils on a digitalised coloured background.

    Giclee Prints

Each original is available as limited edition giclée prints, either as a stretched canvas or on fine art paper in both A2 and A3 sizes. The prints are produced in a limited edition run of just 50 and are all numbered and signed by the artist.
The Giclee method of fine art printing offers one of the highest degrees of accuracy and richness of colour by utilising the latest digital processes and printing with archival pigment inks for long life (UV stable with a lifespan of 100+ years).
The canvas prints are printed onto 100% cotton canvas which has been specially treated to take the giclée process. Printed using lightfast, archival inks and then oversealed with a protective, matt varnish containing UV blockers that filter out 95% of harmful light and help protect the surface. The canvases are then stretched over a unique system of tensioned, box stretchers made from chamfered, obeche wood, obtained from renewable sources. This system ensures that the frames will not warp or twist and that any slackening over time can be re-tensioned simply by pushing the tensioning blocks further into each corner.

All prints are available unframed although I am happy to advise on or organise mounting and/or framing on request.

    Greetings Cards

Each card is A5(21x15cm) and is printed on 330gsm art card and comes with a matching white envelope and packed in a re-sealable cellophane bag.
